Spinach Bloomsdale #5019
(40-45 days) Spinacia oleracea An old-time, heirloom spinach dating back to the 19th century. Dark green, glossy, crinkly leaves stand up well to summer heat and are exceptionally tender and tasty. Buttery sweet and never bitter. Can also over-winter for spring eating. Heavy yielding, time-tested variety.
Start spinach seeds in early spring and early fall, spinach likes cool soil to germinate 50 to 70 degrees F is ideal soil temperature. Plant in rows 1/2″ deep and 10 seeds per foot, thinning to 3 per foot once plants are established. Spinach is a heavy feeder that likes rich soil so add organic fertilizer or compost to rows. Seeds should sprout in 7 to 14 days.
